Khao Lak is located about 50 kilometres north of Koh Phuket Island on the mainland in Phang Nga province. Most of its sandy beaches stretch from the Khaolak-Lumru National Park in the South for about 20 kilometres northwards, starting with Sunset Beach, Nangthong Beach, Bang Niang Beach, Khuk Khak Beach, Pakwib Beach and Bangsak Beach in the very North. A single beach, namely Khao-Luk Beach is located south of and adjacent to Khaolak Lamru National Park.

Bangniang Beach covers the area directly north of Bang-Niang River and extends for some 1.5 kilometres. The sandy beach is lined by casuarina trees and several upmarket Khaolak hotels are located in the southern part of Bang Niang Beach like the Ramada Resort Khao Lak, La Flora Resort and the five-star Mukdara Resort. The area further north is occupied by clusters of small bungalow resorts, some offering direct access to the beach like Chongfah Beach Resort, Amanusa Resort and Ayara Villas.
From those located in the second row, like Bangniang Beach Resort, Jasmine Resort and Sudala Resort, the beach can be reached by walking within minutes. Some independent restaurants are also in walking distance, while Highway No 4 is about 1 kilometre away. Tony Lodge, Motive Cottage and Khaolak Mohin Tara Hotel are located close to the mainroad and cater for the younger people, who are renting motorbikes to visit every day a different beach. The old tin mining town of Takuapa is about 25 kilometres further on.

Khao Lak is spelled in many different ways like Kho Lak, Khao Lac, Kau Lak, Kao Lak, Kau Lac, Khao-Lak, Kao Lak, Ko Lak, Khaolak, Khao Lack, Khao Luk, Kao Luk, Kao Lac, Kao Lack and Khaoluk.
